Heβs offering an olive branch, sort of.
Marc Maron is revealing the true reasons for his feud with Jon Stewart.Β
βJon never did anything to me,β Maron, 62,Β told Esquire in an interview published Thursday, adding that their feud was βpetty.βΒ
βI was just jealous,β the comedian added, noting that their feud was βfully fueledβ by his βinsecurity.β
Maron and Stewart, 62, were rising stars at the same time in the β90s. They both hosted the Comedy Central show βShort Attention Span Theaterβ at different times, before the network axed it in 1994.Β
Stewart went on to host βThe Daily Show with Jon Stewartβ in 1999, and currently still hosts it part-time, alongside rotating guest hosts.Β
Maron, meanwhile, went on to star on the Netflix comedy series βGLOWβ and host his hit podcast, βWTF With Marc Maron,β which launched in 2009 and ended on Oct. 13 after more than 1,000 episodes.
βThe podcast βWTFβ was the original celebrity interview podcast that was followed by a slew of successful imitators, such as βArmchair Expert with Dax Shepardβ and βSmartLessβ hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes.
βThroughout my early career, Jon, who is roughly my age, was everywhere,β Maron explained.Β
He said, βMy envy of him was always β¦ I would just sβt on him, and to his face. It was consuming. I couldnβt get through a week without him being on the cover of a magazine. For some reason, I saw him as, βIf I could only have my sβt together, I could be more like that guy.β β¦ Which wasnβt true, because I was out of my mind, and I was definitely gunning for something else.β
InΒ a 2009 standup set, Maron, who is also Jewish, referred to Stewart as a βJewish pander-monkey.β
During a July interview on NPRβsΒ Wild Card with Rachel MartinΒ podcast, Maron said, βweβve had confrontations about it and we are not friendsβ and referred to Stewart as his βnemesis.β
The comedian also told the GuardianΒ in 2018, βJon always represented to me why I was failing β¦ So when Iβd see him, Iβd act like he was personally destroying me.β
Stewart hasnβt addressed his relationship with Maron publicly. But in September, former βDaily Showβ writer and correspondent Wyatt Cenac said on theΒ Inside Late NightΒ podcast that he was the βconsigliereβ between Stewart and Maron during a previous effort to mend fences.
Cenac, who worked on βThe Daily Showβ from 2008 to 2012, didnβt specify the date but clarified that it happened during that time period.
He added, βMaron and Jon talk. I hear both of their sides of it. I may be the one person who heard the aftermath from both of them. I hear Jonβs side of it, and Jon was like, βIβm not going to do his podcast β¦ he just wants me to do the podcast so that it gets numbers for his podcast. I donβt want to do that.ββ
Cenac offered his perspective: βTo me it was like oh sβt, you two are the same β¦ I think they both see each other as a threat.β
In his recent Esquire interview, Maron also described βThe Daily Showβ host as a βsmart, cute, Jewish guyβ who was βdisciplinedβ and knew how to use talents.Β
In contrast, the βGLOWβ actor noted, βI never had any control over my talent. I never knew its limitations or what it was.βΒ
Early in his podcastβs run, he reached out to Stewart to see if heβd appear on βWTF With Marc Maronβ and was βkind of apologizingβ on the phone.Β
Maron said that Stewart replied, βThereβs no love here.β
The comedian added that Stewart told him, ββI might be willing to have coffee or something, but Iβm not doing that with you,ββ referring to talking to Maron in a public forum on βWTF with Marc Maron.βΒ
Maron recalled, βAnd then he said, βIβm sure what youβre doing is very creative, and good luck with it.β Just the stinging condescension of that β¦ it didnβt help anything.β
