Embattled singer Liam Payne struggled with his sexuality before falling to his death from a hotel balcony, according to an explosive new report.
The revelations were laid bare as an anonymous source came forward to Rolling Stone, four months after the One Direction star’s startling death in Argentina.
The insider also claimed in the Feb. 11 article that Payne “sexted men” during his relationship with ex Maya Henry, whom he dated from 2018 to 2022.
Two years after their split, Henry sent Payne a cease-and-desist, claiming he “repeatedly sent unsolicited and disturbing images and videos” to her and her loved ones.
Henry broke her silence on Payne’s passing in the March 2025 Rolling Stone cover story.
“This was someone I loved very much,” she said in a written statement. “Initially, it was the drug use and addictions that tore us apart. Anyone who has been with an addict understands how difficult that is. While I loved him deeply, he did things that hurt me in ways I’ll never fully understand, and he continued to hurt me years after we broke up.”
She added, “On drugs, he became someone unrecognizable — so different from his sober self. I kept hoping each incident would be a wake-up call for him to get help, but it never was. I tried to be there for him. I loved him so much that I convinced myself I could fix things.”
“I put myself in situations that were unsafe and harmful, ignoring every red flag,” Henry explained. “I knew there were parts of himself he was struggling with — parts of his identity he wasn’t ready to fully face, even within our relationship.”
According to a source, Payne forced Henry to get an abortion after they learned she was pregnant in 2020.
“Liam sent Maya a long message saying it’s either get an abortion and stay with him, or raise the kid alone and he will not acknowledge either of them,” the source alleged.
“This was a surprise to Maya,” the source continued, “because Liam wanted to have a family, and they were trying for a kid.”
Henry ultimately terminated the pregnancy, the insider said.
Henry did not address the abortion claims in the Rolling Stone article. She previously opened up about getting an abortion in her 2024 novel “Looking Forward,” which was inspired by true events. She did not reveal whether Payne was the father in the novel.
“If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have done it,” Henry said about the abortion in a May 2024 interview with People. “But then also, if I were to have made a different decision, then I would’ve lost the person that I loved. There were definitely difficult conversations about it. But looking back now, things happen for a reason.”
She added, “It was very lonely, having these men tell you, ‘Oh, it’s going to feel like a heavy period, it’s not going to be that painful, it’s going to be easy.’ But I’m like, you’ve never even gone through anything like [this], so how would you know to tell me? That’s why I wanted to include it in the book, because I’ve seen so many people online talk about taking the abortion pill and it was the most painful thing for them. It’s just mind-boggling to me that you could tell a woman how they’re going to feel.”
The Rolling Stone article also alleged that Payne chased Henry with an ax, pushed her down a flight of stairs, and revealed he sexted strangers by accidentally broadcasting text messages to their TV.
A source close to Henry claimed she never reported Payne’s drug use or blow-ups to the police.
“Liam had a lot of deeply personal trauma Maya was aware of that occurred well before he joined [One Direction],” alleged the source. “When he got violent, the thought was never that he should be sent to jail. He needed help, or to get support from an institution, so he could get to the root of his problems.”
Regarding their breakup, Henry told Rolling Stone, “It wasn’t about me or anything I did. It was about struggles beyond my control. And in the end, I had to choose myself. I had to walk away, no matter how much it hurt, because staying in his world meant losing myself.”
Payne was dating Katie Cassidy at the time of his death. She was with him in Argentina but flew home before he tragically fell from the balcony of his third-floor Buenos Aires suite.
The cause of death was “polytrauma” and “an internal and external hemorrhage,” according to local officials.
Payne’s autopsy later determined he had a toxic mixture of drugs in his system, including crack and so-called “pink cocaine” — a mix of ketamine and other drugs.
Five people have been charged in connection with Payne’s death over allegedly acquiring and supplying him with drugs.
