Singer Khalid has come out as gay, saying he made the decision to publicly reveal his sexuality after being outed.
The seven-time Grammy nominee, 26, shared a series of posts on X Friday night, in which the hitmaker said he was neither βashamedβ of being gay or βhiding anythingβ while noting that his sexuality is βnobodies [sic] business.β
In his first post, Khalid shared a rainbow flag emoji along with three exclamation marks, adding, βthere yall go. next topic please lol.β
One person responded to his post, writing βWait hope Mr Khalid isnβt GEHHH!β That prompted Khalid to quote the reply and add, βI am! And thatβs okay.β
The hitmaker then revealed that he was outed.
βI got outted [sic] and the world still continues to turn. Letβs get this straight (lmao) I am not ashamed of my sexuality! In reality it ainβt nobodies business! But I am okay with me,β he wrote along with a black heart emoji and signing the post, βlove yall.β
Khalid went on to take issue with the suggestion that he was hiding his sexuality.
β[T]he closet was glass baby. but we accept you. its not about who you love its about your artistry!β a commenter said.
In another post, Khalid replied, βI wasnβt hiding anything! Itβs just not any of your business.β
After a fan came to his defense, posting on X that Khalid βdidnβt need to TELL nobody,β the singer responded, βthank you!!!! I was never hiding.β
Khalid then signed off, writing in a separate post, βaight love yall thank yall Iβm off this.β
Speculation about who outed Khalid grew as soon as he made the startling disclosure. Many fans suggested that rapper and singer Hugo Almonte was responsible. Almonte, 28, who is openly bisexual, shared a photo on X of him and Khalid less than 30 minutes before the latter began posting.
βBβch ass lied and said that I broke into his house cause I didnβt want him,β Almonte wrote.
The post was the last in a string of messages making derogatory remarks about βOne of your favorite gay rappers,β implying that Almonte and the unnamed individual had sexual relations.
Khalid received an outpouring of support online.
βGetting outed is horrible!β one person posted. βIβm sorry you had to go through that! We love and support you!β
Another fan wrote, βYour amazing ! To the person who outted [sic] you they are miserable with themselves, you keep doing you !!β
Named one of Timeβs Most Influential People in 2019, Khalid has an impressive record in the music industry. His sophomore album βFree Spiritβ debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 has been certified platinum by the RIAA. The title track off that album hit the #3 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, and his previous singles βLocationβ and βYoung Dumb & Brokeβ climbed to No. 2 and No. 1, respectively on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart.
