Dr. Craneโs clarifying.
In October, Kelsey Grammer and Ted Danson reflected on their days at the Bull & Finch Pub โย revealing that they had a falling out and didnโt speak for nearly 30 years. Now, Grammer is clarifying what actually went down between the two.
โIt got a little blown out of proportion. There really wasnโt an argument. It was at a time in my life when I was actually going through a lot of self-doubt, self-loathing, honestly,โ the โFrasierโ alum, 69, exclusively told The Post while promoting his new film โWish You Were Here.โ
โIt was when I was drinking a lot. Ted had just come up and said, โYou know, Iโm kind of mad at you that sometimes you donโt show up ready to go.โ And I said, โOK, I respect that.โ And that actually was sort of it,โ he explained.
โNow, maybe what happened for Ted was he stepped away from what might have been a better friendship. Maybe he just had to protect himself. I donโt really know. But, I said, โThanks.โ We were fine with that.โ
In October, the former co-stars reunited on Danson and Woody Harrelsonโs โWhere Everybody Knows Your Nameโ podcast. The โThree Men and a Babyโ star brought up his past gripe with Grammer, but didnโt reveal what caused their strained friendship.
โThis isnโt self-deprecating, but itโs โ I feel like I got stuck a little bit with you during the โCheersโ years. I have a memory of getting angry at you once,โ Danson told Grammer on his podcast.
โYeah, you came and told me that one day,โ Grammer replied.
โAnd itโs stuck in both of our memories,โ continued Danson. โBut I feel like, fโk, I donโt know. I missed out on the last 30 years of Kelsey Grammer and I feel like itโs my bad, my doing, and I almost feel like apologizing to you โฆ I apologize to you and me that I sat back, you know, and didnโt โฆ and I really do apologize,โ Danson said.
โYou said something wonderful to me, though, too, that Iโve always, I quote to other people,โ Grammer revealed. โWhen I turned 40, you came up and you said, โYou know what it means, donโt you? Now that youโre 40, it means youโre finally worth having a conversation with.โโ
โCheersโ aired for 11 seasons, running 270 episodes, from 1982 to 1993.
Danson, 77, played bar owner Sam Malone, while Grammer played Dr. Frasier Crane and Harrelson, 63, portrayed Woody Boyd.
Some of the cast โย which also included Rhea Perlman, John Ratzenberger, George Wendt, Shelley Long and the late Kirstie Alley โย reunited at the 2024 Emmys. But Grammer insists a revival will never happen.
โNot a revival, certainly, because thereโs just too many disparate elements that have to kind of come dancing together. And it reflects a time in our sort of culture that doesnโt really exist anymore. I mean, maybe there is a bar scene still. Iโm just not aware of it anymore,โ he told The Post, laughing. โI sort of left that scene behind me some time ago.โ
โโCheersโ will not come back,โ he doubled down. โI mean, Jimmy Burrows has always said, โNo, that bar doesnโt exist anymore.’โ
Despite not returning to โwhere everybody knowsโ his name, Grammer reprised his role of Fraiser in the Paramount+ revival of his titular show โ and has nothing but love for Danson.
โIโve always thought of him with the most loving kind of remembrance and fondness. Same with Woody. I mean, you know, Woods and I have actually stayed in touch a bit more than Ted and I have. Thatโs still an active sort of friendship. And we were emailing just last week,โ he noted. โI donโt see the other boys very much.โ
He quipped: โI bumped into George Wendt a few months ago at some signing thing, and I thought, โOh, Iโm never doing this again.’โ
