Katy Perry celebrated the first day of Pride Month on Saturday by editing NFL star Harrison Butker’s controversial graduation speech from last month.
Butker, 28, made a 20-minute address at the graduation ceremony at Benedictine College in Kansas on May 11 where he railed against working women, Pride Month, abortion and other issues.
But Perry, 39, decided to change Butker’s speech by editing his words that led to swift backlash on social media.
In Perry’s new video that she shared to Instagram, Butker congratulated the female graduates on their “amazing accomplishment” and encouraged them to “lead successful careers in the world,” rather than advocate for homemaking which he did in his original speech.
“I say all of this to you because I have seen it firsthand, how much happier someone can be supporting women and not saying that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,” Butker said in the edited speech.
“The road ahead is bright, things are changing, society is shifting and people young and old are embracing diversity equity and inclusion.”
Perry’s version also featured Butker wishing the graduates a happy Pride Month in his speech.
“Fixed this for my girls, my graduates, and my gays — you can do anything, congratulations and happy pride 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ 🧡,” Perry wrote in the caption of her video.
Perry turned the comments off on her post, but her fans showed support with over 100,000 likes.
Butker received backlash for his controversial comments at Benedictine College’s graduation.
The Kansas City Chiefs player referred to Pride Month as an example of “the deadly sins” taught in church and abortion, in vitro fertilization and surrogacy as examples of “degenerate cultural values.”
He also told the women in the audience that their “most important title” should be “homemaker.”
“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,” he said.
Celebrities like Maren Morris, Flavor Flav, Maria Shriver, and Hoda Kotb spoke out against Butker after his speech made headlines.
The NFL also released a statement about Butker’s comments and said the “views are not those of the NFL as an organization.”
However, other stars such as Whoopi Goldberg and Patricia Heaton defended Butker and said that the football player is entitled to his opinions.
On May 24, Butker spoke at the Regina Caeli Academy’s Courage Under Fire gala in Nashville and said he doesn’t regret his controversial graduation speech.
The athlete even doubled down on his theories and claimed that women receiving degrees had been told a “diabolical lie” about entering the workforce.
