Killer hosts.
John Mulaney joined Steve Martin during the “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” opening monologue and noted that over the last 50 years, 894 people have hosted the NBC sketch comedy series.
“And it amazes me that only two of them have committed murder,” Mulaney added, which sparked laughter from Martin, 79, and the star-studded audience.
Right after the joke, viewers took to social media to speculate which two former “SNL” hosts Mulaney was talking about.
Ultimately, four different stars were named in the online chatter: O.J. Simpson, Robert Blake, Alec Baldwin and Robert Wagner.
Simpson, the odds-on favorite of the two hosts Mulaney was referencing, hosted the show in Feb. 1978.
16 years later, Simpson was arrested and charged with the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. The pair were stabbed to death in 1994 outside Nicole’s home in the Brentwood neighborhood of LA.
In one of the 20th century’s most famous trials, Simpson was ultimately acquitted by the jury.
But two years later, a civil jury found the ex-NFL star liable for wrongful death and he was ordered to pay millions to the families. He later spent nine years in jail after being convicted of armed robbery and kidnapping in 2008.
Simpson died of cancer in 2024 at age 76.
Blake was the other former “SNL” host that viewers brought up.
The “Lost Highway” actor, who hosted in Nov. 1982, was accused of killing his second wife, Bonny Lee Bakley, in 2001.
Bakley, 44, was shot and killed while sitting in Blake’s car outside of a Studio City restaurant where the couple had just dined.
Blake, who maintained his innocence, was acquitted of Bakley’s murder in 2005. But like Simpson, he was found liable in a civil court for the death and was ordered to pay damages.
He died in March 2023 at age 89.
Baldwin, who holds the record for the most times hosting “SNL” at 17, was infamously charged with involuntary manslaughter in 2023.
He accidentally fired a prop gun mistakenly loaded with a live round that killed 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in Oct. 2021 on the set of “Rust” in New Mexico.
Baldwin faced a maximum of 18 months behind bars, but the judge ultimately tossed out the case during the July 2024 trial, slamming prosecutors for withholding critical evidence from the defense.
He was in attendance during the “SNL” special on Sunday night.
Wagner, who hosted in Dec. 1989, was never charged with murder, but he was rumored to have killed his wife, actress Natalie Wood. The actress drowned on Nov. 29, 1981, while boating off Catalina Island.
Christopher Walken, Wood’s then-costar in the movie “Brainstorm,” and the boat’s captain, Dennis Davern, were also on board at the time.
“We were all so shattered by the loss, and we were hanging on to each other,” Wagner said in a People cover story in 2016 on her passing. “You just take it moment by moment and hope that it gets better.”
He’d later write about the tragedy in his memoir, “I Loved Her in the Movies: Memories of Hollywood’s Legendary Actresses.”
“When Natalie died, I thought my life was over,” he penned. “Luckily I had the help of a great many people who loved her and who loved me as well.”
The “SNL” 50th anniversary special was stacked with former cast members including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Eddie Murphy, Amy Poehler, Pete Davidson, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Martin Short and more.
There were also appearances from former hosts like Pedro Pascal, Scarlett Johansson, Drew Barrymore, Jon Hamm and Ayo Edebiri.
