She doesnโt bury hatchets; she sharpens them.
Jenna Ortega has come under fire for saying she was โan unhappy personโ after getting famous for her role as Wednesday Addams in the hit Netflix show โWednesday.โ
The 22-year-old actress opened up about the role and the fame it brought her during an interview with Harperโs Bazaar published on Wednesday, May 28.
โTo be quite frank, after the show and trying to figure everything out, I was an unhappy person,โ Ortega admitted.ย โAfter the pressure, the attention โ as somebody whoโs quite introverted, that was so intense and so scary.โ
Ortega, who began filming the first season of โWednesdayโ in 2021, added that she felt โincredibly misunderstoodโ upon getting popular from the show.
โI feel like being a bully is very popular right now,โ she added. โHaving been on the wrong side of the rumor mill was incredibly eye-opening.โ
Elsewhere in her interview, the scream queen said that being Wednesday Addams is โvery patronizingโ because she is stuck playing a schoolgirl on the screen despite becoming a young woman in real life.
Ortega, whose birthday is Sept. 27, will turn 23 shortly after the second season of โWednesdayโ premieres on Netflix on Aug. 6.
โIโm doing a show Iโm going to be doing for years where I play a schoolgirl,โ Ortega explained. โBut Iโm also a young woman. You just donโt feel like youโre being taken seriously.โ
โYou know, itโs like how youโre dressed in the schoolgirl costume,โ she added. โThereโs just something about it thatโs very patronizing.โ
But Ortegaโs remarks created a serious backlash, with several of her critics rushing to social media to bash the former โScreamโ star over her surprising comments.
โI bet the huge 6 and 7 figure paychecks she took for the role werenโt that patronizing though,โ one person tweeted after the interview.
โCry me a river,โ someone else added, while a third critic commented, โSo sick of people complaining about easy jobs they made millions on.โ
โThen she could have passed on the role,โ a fourth person wrote on X. โI like her but this seems like biting the hand that feeds you.โ
However, Ortegaโs supporters defended the โBeetlejuice Beetlejuiceโ starlet over what she had to say about her role on โWednesdayโ and the popularity it brought her as an actress.
โShe isnโt wrong,โ one supporter wrote.
โFair play to her,โ another added, while a third fan tweeted, โShe looked nice as Wednesday.โ
โYall need to leave this girl alone,โ a fourth fan commented.
Meanwhile, Ortega also clarified that she remains โvery gratefulโ for the fandom she has received because of โWednesday.โ
โI want to be able to give back to them,โ she said of her fans. โBut I also want to do things that are creatively fulfilling to me.โ
The โDeath of a Unicornโ star received similar backlash for comments she made in March 2023.
At the time, Ortega revealed that she had changed parts of her โWednesdayโ script when certain lines โdid not make sense for her character at all.โ
โI donโt think Iโve ever had to put my foot down more on a set in a way that I had to onย โWednesday,’โ she said during a podcast interview with Dax Shepard at the time.
Ortega later backtracked on those remarks, admitting that she โcould have used my words betterโ when talking with Shepard about the show.
โTo be fair, I think I probably could have been โ I probably could have used my words better in describing all of that,โ she told Vanity Fair in September 2024.
โI think, oftentimes, Iโm such a rambler,โ she added. โI think it was hard because I felt like had I represented the situation better, it probably wouldโve been received better.โ
