Halle Berry’s fans aren’t happy.
The Oscar-winning actress’ ex-husband, David Justice, is facing backlash after he said that his and Berry’s marriage didn’t work out because she wasn’t “maternal” and didn’t help enough around the house.
The former MLB star, 59, opened up about his and Berry’s 1997 divorce during Thursday’s episode of Matt Barnes’ “All the Smoke” podcast.
“Because I was young and I had only, honestly, been in one relationship before her, my knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t vast,” Justice began.
“So, I’m looking at my mom, and I’m a Midwest guy,” he continued. “So, in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean. Then I’m thinking, ‘OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?’”
“At that time, as a young guy, she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly, and then we start having issues,” the three-time MLB All-Star added. “I’ll say this, we never had any issues about any women, other men.”
Fans of the “X-Men” actress later rushed to social media to trash Justice over his surprising remarks.
“David Justice is a sexist pig,” one person wrote on X.
“No man should depend on a woman for his cooking, cleaning, and household chores,” added another. “This is not 1825.”
“David Justice sounds like a Neanderthal,” a third user tweeted. “He thinks a woman’s job is to cook & clean.”
“Isn’t this a sexist, misogynistic comment?” a fourth person asked, while yet another X user commented, “Why is David Justice speaking out against Halle Berry when they’ve been divorced for umpteen years?”
Justice and Berry, 58, first met in May 1992, and they married in January 1993.
However, the pair separated just three years later in February 1996, and they finalized their divorce in June 1997.
Elsewhere during the podcast interview, Justice explained why he decided to marry Berry after only a few months of dating.
“She asked me to marry her after knowing me for five months,” he said. “I said OK, because I couldn’t say no. But I don’t know if my heart was really into it, but I didn’t want to make her feel bad and say no, you know. I was just in the moment.”
The former Atlanta Braves player also opened up about the backlash he faced after the “Monster’s Ball” actress accused an unnamed ex of abuse.
“She let the world think it. She didn’t come out and say, ‘Nah, it wasn’t David,’” he shared. “She let the world think that it was me. That I never appreciated with her.”
“I thought she was dead wrong for that,” he added. “I thought she should’ve handled that better.”
Justice went on to marry Rebecca Villalobos four years after his divorce from Berry was finalized. The pair have three children together.
As for Berry, she was married to singer and actor Eric Benét from 2001 to 2005 before French actor Olivier Martinez from 2013 to 2016. She and Martinez share one son, Maceo-Robert, 11.
The “Die Another Day” star also dated model Gabriel Aubry from 2005 to 2010. They welcomed daughter Nahla Ariela, 17, in 2008.
Berry has most recently been in a relationship with singer-songwriter Van Hunt. The pair began dating in 2020, and he has even proposed to the “Moonfall” actress.
“I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold as you can see,” Hunt told “Today with Jenna & Friends” in June. “It’s just out there floating,” he added. “You know, maybe you can encourage her.”
