George Lopez is stepping down from stand-up. The comedian opened up about his major career change during an interview with Tamron Hall.
βIt is the last one,β he said of his upcoming special for Amazonβs Prime Video. βIβve subjected the American people to enough of my crap. It seems like the right time; itβs been the one thing that has just never left me my whole life and itβs a wonderful place to leave it at this particular point.β
In part, Lopez also wants to spend more time with his daughter Mayan Lopez. The pair share the screen in their NBC comedy βLopez vs Lopez,β which is headed into its third season.
βI love the show,β he went on.
The actor, 63, told People on Wednesday that the sitcom will be his final project.
βIt makes it happy. I mean, I would like for it to go a few more seasons, but yeah, after this, Iβd like to have a little time for myself,β he said while attending NBCβs Comedies celebration with Mayan, 28.
He went on to discuss his working dynamic with Mayan and her work ethic.
βIn the beginning, I could tell when she was a little bit maybe frustrated a little bit and I would talk to her a little bit, but she works really hard when sheβs not on the set,β he explained. βThatβs my big thing β is to be on time. And sheβs always prepared.β
βItβs exciting,β he continued. βI mean, every week that we do the show, she just gets better and better. Sheβs able to do more physical stuff, more character stuff, and thatβs really kind of what she talked about when she was 12 and she was talking about wanting to be on TV.β
Mayan chimed in: βItβs like working with your parent, but I have so much fun with him always.β
His career news comes months after he slammed an βinadequateβ casino for what he described as an βunsafe environment.β
Eagle Mountain CasinoΒ alleged that the comedianΒ walked out of his show 30 minutes before it was scheduled to endΒ and blamed his security team who couldβve βeasily escorted any hecklers out.β
The casino said that Lopez βlet down his fans and sold out audienceβ by leaving early.
His rep later released a statement to The Post about the situation.
βItβs the venue or casinoβs job to provide a good experience for both the artist and the fans, but the casino failed in this regard,β a spokesperson for George said at the time.
βThe audience was overserved and unruly, and the casino staff was unable to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for the artist and guests. Georgeβs personal security team worked with the venue security staff to maintain order, ensure safety, and eject disruptive individuals,β the statement continued. βUnfortunately, the casino security team was not adequate to accomplish this task. George is not obligated to perform in an unsafe environment. He feels badly that those who came to see the show were unable to do so as a result.β
