The Prince of Wales has spoken out following the murder of his former nanny’s stepson, Edward Pettifer.
Pettifer, whose stepmom was Prince William and Prince Harry’s nanny Tiggy Pettifer, was identified as one of the 14 victims killed in the New Orleans terrorist attack on New Year’s Day.
In a statement, the future king, 42, said: “Catherine and I have been shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Ed Pettifer. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Pettifer family and all those innocent people who have been tragically impacted by this horrific attack.”
Pettifer, 31, died from “blunt force injuries” after Shamsud-Din Jabbar drove a rental pickup truck down Bourbon Street in the French Quarter just after 3 a.m. on Wednesday, per the BBC.
Pettifer was the oldest child of ex-Coldstream Guards officer Charles Pettifer and Camilla Wyatt. The couple – who also share son Harry, 29 – parted ways before Charles went on to marry Tiggy.
Tiggy cared for Princes William and Harry from 1993 to 1999, and supported them through the death of their mother, Princess Diana.
“The entire family are devastated at the tragic news of Ed’s death in New Orleans. He was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew and a friend to so many,” Pettifer’s family said in a statement.
“We will all miss him terribly. Our thoughts are with the other families who have lost their family members due to this terrible attack. We request that we can grieve the loss of Ed as a family in private. Thank you.”
According to the BBC, King Charles has contacted the Pettifer family to share his condolences.
The former nanny has two sons of her own: Tom, 22, who is Prince William’s godson, and Fred, 23, who is Prince Harry’s godson. Tom was also a page boy at the William and Kate’s 2011 wedding.
In 2020, Tiggy, who now runs a bed and breakfast at the family home near Crickhowell in Wales, was named godmother of Harry and Meghan Markle’s son Archie.
However, sources did tell the outlet that Prince Harry would not be commenting on Pettifer’s passing.
