En Vogue’s former lead vocalist Dawn Robinson has revealed that she’s been living in her car for the past three years.
The “Free Your Mind” hitmaker, 58, opened up about her current living situation in a YouTube video on Tuesday, saying she decided to make her car her permanent home after living with her parents in 2020.
“You guys, for the past three years, I have been living in my car. I said it, oh my gosh, it’s out,” she said in the nearly 20-minute video.
Robinson said her mother’s “anger” was the driving factor behind her decision to leave her home and take refuge inside the vehicle.
“That was wonderful until it wasn’t. I love my mom, but she became very angry,” she explained. “A lot of her anger, she was taking out on me. I was her target all the time and I was like, ‘I can’t deal with this.’”
The singer explained that one of her managers urged her to return to Los Angeles after she had been sleeping in her car for “a month.”
There, the unnamed manager opened up his home to her, she recalled.
“Then when I got to his place, he actually didn’t have room for me,” she said, adding that she ended up checking into a hotel for a night.
She ended up staying at the hotel for 8 months, she adds, during which time she started researching “car life.”
“I loved what I was seeing. I just thought, ‘Wow I can do that. I can do this,’” she said.
Elsewhere in the video, the “Hold On” hitmaker opened up about her strained relationship with her family, admitting that she’s estranged from her two siblings and her “forever mother-in-law.”
Still, Robinson admitted that her current setup allows her to feel “free.”

“I felt like, ‘Wow, this is so different.’ I felt like I was on a camping trip,” she said, adding that she has a gym membership that allows her to use its shower facilities.
Admitting that her living situation is unconventional, the “Don’t Go” singer said she has no regrets — and revealed that a lot of celebrities sleep in their cars.
The former vocalist said she’s not looking for sympathy from fans.
“Like I said, I’m learning about who I am. I’m learning myself as a person (and) as a woman,” she said.
