Elwood Edwards, the voice of AOL’s iconic “You’ve Got Mail” greeting, has died.
Edwards passed away on Tuesday, the day before his birthday, following a long illness. He was 74. His death was announced by his former employer, WKYC-TV Studios, in Cleveland, Ohio. The local news network did not provide any additional details about his illness.
A longtime fixture at WKYC, aka 3News, Edwards had many roles over the many years he worked at the TV station, including graphics guru, camera operator, and general jack-of-all-trades.
It was in 1989 that he recorded the famous “You’ve Got Mail” audio for the then-mostly unknown internet provider, America Online (AOL). Edwards’ wife worked for a company that later became AOL, which approached him to record four lines of voiceover: “Welcome,” “You’ve Got Mail,” “Files done” and “Goodbye.”
Edwards was paid only $200.
This is a developing story.
