A dinner invite from Marlon Brando was simply an offer Eddie Murphy could not refuse.
Recalling a memorable conversation he had with the late 2-time Oscar winner, Murphy, 63, recalled a couple of exchanges he had with Brando, who was known to never mince words.
In an interview with the New York TimesβΒ podcastΒ βThe Interview,β the βTrading Placesβ actor detailed the time he was invited to the late actorβs home following his first-ever film role, in 1982βsΒ β48 Hrs.β
βThis is how long ago it was: He was going, βI canβt stand that kid with the gun.β I was like, βWhat kid with the gun?β He said, βHeβs on the poster!β β Murphy called.
βI was like, βClint Eastwood?β βYeah, that guy!β He was calling Clint Eastwood βthat kid,’β he added.
Despite calling Eastwood a βkid,β Brando was just six years older than the βMillion Dollar Babyβ star.
Elsewhere, Murphy recalled the very first time he hung out with Brando, whoΒ died at age 80 in 2004.
Brando picked up Murphy at a rooftop restaurant at the LβErmitage luxury hotel in Los Angeles, before inviting him over to his home.
βHe came and picked me up at the hotel. But there was a time mix-up, and I came down like a half-hour late β he was waiting for me in the car,βΒ Murphy recalled.
βWe went to his house on Mulholland,β he shared, adding that he βwas just going on and onβ about Brandoβs 1972 filmΒ βThe Godfather.β
Brando, who played Don Vito Corleone in the hit film, brushed off the praise.
βHe was like, βEh,Β The Godfather.β Not justΒ βThe GodfatherβΒ β acting,β Murphy recalled. βHe was like, βActing is bullsβt, and everybody can act.’β
Murphy said he looks back on those memories fondly to this day.
βI was having these famous people that I grew up watching on television wanting to have a meal with me,β he said.
βNow I look back and go, βWow, thatβs crazy. The greatest actor of all time wants to have dinner with you!β But back then I just thought, βWell, thatβs the way it is. You make a movie, and Marlon Brando calls.’β
