DJ Unk, the Atlanta rapper best known for his hits “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” has died. He was 43.
Born Anthony Leonard Platt, Unk passed away on Friday, according to a statement from Korey “Big Oomp” Roberson, who founded the record label Big Oomp Records, which signed Unk in 2000.
His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, also confirmed the news in an emotional post on Facebook.
A cause of death was not disclosed; however, a source told The Post that he allegedly suffered from “health complications.” In 2009, Unk was hospitalized for a heart attack, which he told XXL was brought on by nonstop touring, poor eating habits, drinking and smoking.
“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as ‘DJ Unk,’” Roberson said in a statement provided to The Post on behalf of the Big Oomp Records family. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the countless fans who were touched by his artistry and spirit.”
“DJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label and the imprint that he left globally will be cherished forever,” the statement continued.
“Hit songs such as ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step’ have left an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire artists, DJs, and fans alike for years to come. His energy, creativity, and commitment to the craft will never be forgotten.”
“We ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We also want to thank everyone who has supported DJ Unk and the Oomp Camp over the years.”
Roberson concluded, “Rest in peace, Unk. You will forever be missed. Now walk it out!”
In her Facebook post, the rapper’s significant other asked for privacy.
“Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father,” Long-Platt wrote. “Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.”
Unk rose to fame in the mid-2000s with his debut album, “Beat’n Down Yo Block!” He had two breakout singles from the 2006 record — “Walk It Out,” which climbed into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and spurred a remix featuring André 3000 and Jim Jones, followed by “2 Step.”
Unk dropped his sophomore album, “2econd Season,” in 2008, which peaked at No. 15 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
A friend of the family told The Post, “Unk never stopped touring and performing. No matter where you were, when you heard Walk It Out, you were guaranteed to start dancing.”
“‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step’ remained two of the hottest songs on the planet. They will forever be considered legendary.”
The friend added, “Unk was active in the studio up until the very end. Music was always near and dear to his heart.”
Unk’s work was praised not only by his fans but also by some of the biggest names in music.
“The beat was so jammin’ that you just wanted to get on it,” André 3000 said in a 2023 interview about dropping a verse on the 2007 remix of “Walk It Out.”
Dre added that contributing to the track was a “blessing.”
