DJ Unk, the Atlanta rapper best known for his hits βWalk It Outβ and β2 Step,β has died. He was 43.
Born Anthony Leonard Platt, Unk passed away on Friday, according to a statement from Korey βBig Oompβ Roberson, who founded the record label Big Oomp Records, which signed Unk in 2000.
His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, also confirmed the news in an emotional post on Facebook.
A cause of death was not disclosed; however, a source told The Post that he allegedly suffered from βhealth complications.β In 2009, Unk was hospitalized for a heart attack, which he told XXL was brought on by nonstop touring, poor eating habits, drinking and smoking.
βIt is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as βDJ Unk,’β Roberson said in a statement provided to The Post on behalf of the Big Oomp Records family. βWe extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the countless fans who were touched by his artistry and spirit.β
βDJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label and the imprint that he left globally will be cherished forever,β the statement continued.
βHit songs such as βWalk It Outβ and β2 Stepβ have left an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire artists, DJs, and fans alike for years to come. His energy, creativity, and commitment to the craft will never be forgotten.β
βWe ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We also want to thank everyone who has supported DJ Unk and the Oomp Camp over the years.β
Roberson concluded, βRest in peace, Unk. You will forever be missed. Now walk it out!β
In her Facebook post, the rapperβs significant other asked for privacy.
βPlease respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father,β Long-Platt wrote. βOur life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.β
Unk rose to fame in the mid-2000s with his debut album, βBeatβn Down Yo Block!β He had two breakout singles from the 2006 record β βWalk It Out,β which climbed into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and spurred a remix featuring AndrΓ© 3000 and Jim Jones, followed by β2 Step.β
Unk dropped his sophomore album, β2econd Season,β in 2008, which peaked at No. 15 on Billboardβs Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
A friend of the family told The Post, βUnk never stopped touring and performing. No matter where you were, when you heard Walk It Out, you were guaranteed to start dancing.β
ββWalk It Outβ and β2 Stepβ remained two of the hottest songs on the planet. They will forever be considered legendary.β
The friend added, βUnk was active in the studio up until the very end. Music was always near and dear to his heart.β
Unkβs work was praised not only by his fans but also by some of the biggest names in music.
βThe beat was so jamminβ that you just wanted to get on it,β AndrΓ© 3000 said in a 2023 interview about dropping a verse on the 2007 remix of βWalk It Out.β
Dre added that contributing to the track was a βblessing.β
