Denzel Washington is opening up about his past drug and alcohol use, admitting heβs βdone a lot of damageβ to his body.
The Oscar winner, 69, has been sober for almost 10 years but got candid about his former vices in the Winter issue ofΒ Esquire.
Washington said his unhealthy habits started with wine.
βWine is very tricky. Itβs very slow. It ainβt like,Β boom,Β all of a sudden,β he shared in the interview.
The βGladiator IIβ actor explained, βI never got strung out on heroin. Never got strung out on coke. Never got strung out on hard drugs. I shot dope just like they shot dope, but I never got strung out.
βAnd I never got strung out on liquor. I had this ideal idea of wine tastings and all that β which is what it was at first. And thatβs a very subΒtle thing. I mean, I drank the best.β
Washington shared that he had a massive wine cellar in his home and often blew through thousands of dollars on pricey bottles.
βI learned to drink the best. So Iβm gonna drink my β61s and my β82s and whatever we had. Wine was my thing, and now I was popping $4,000 bottles just because thatβs what was left,β he said.
βAnd then later in those years Iβd call Gil Turnerβs Fine Wines & Spirits on Sunset Boulevard and say, βSend me two bottles, the best of this or that.ββ
His wife, Pauletta, would often ask him why heβd only order two bottles at a time, to which he replied, ββBecause if I order more, Iβll drink more.β So I kept it to two bottles, and I would drink them both over the course of the day.β
Despite his frequent alcohol use, Washington said he wouldnβt indulge while filming.
βI never drank while I was working or preparing. I would clean up, go back to work β I could do both,β the actor explained.
βHowever many months of shooting,Β bang,Β itβs time to go. Then,Β boom.Β Three months of wine, then time to go back to work.β
The βGloryβ star said he βwasnβt drinkingβ when he filmedΒ the 2012 drama βFlight,β in which he played an alcoholic pilot.
βIβm sure I did as soon as I finished. That was getting toward the end of the drinking, but I knew a lot about waking up and looking around, not knowing what happened,β he toldΒ Esquire.
Washington quit drinking in Dec. 2014, shortly after his 60th birthday. Reflecting on his past, the actor admitted, βIβve done a lot of damage to the body. Weβll see. Iβve been clean.β
Heβll turn 70 on Dec. 28 and acknowledged that βthis is the last chapter.β
Washington recently announced he would be retiring after his next batch of films.
βThings are opening up for me now β like being seventy. Itβs real. And itβs okay,β he told the publication. βThis is the last chapter β if I get another thirty, what do I want to do? My mother made it to ninety-seven. Iβm doing the best I can.β
Washingtonβs latest movie, βGladiator II,β hits theaters on Nov. 22.
