James Van Der Beek has died at the age of 48 following his battle with colorectal cancer.
The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office received the report of his death at 6:44 a.m., though no official cause was provided. The beloved “Dawson’s Creek” and “Varsity Blues” star was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023 at age 46, but he kept the diagnosis private until revealing it publicly in November 2024.
His wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, shared the heartbreaking news in an Instagram post shortly after TMZ first reported it. Van Der Beek leaves behind six children from his marriage to Kimberly.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend,” she said.
Last year, Van Der Beek became emotional on “Good Morning America” while reflecting on his cancer journey, particularly when speaking about the unwavering support his wife provided throughout his treatment.
He had been slated to reunite with his “Dawson’s Creek” castmates in September, but health challenges forced him to withdraw.
