David Spade is reflecting on his long-running feud with Eddie Murphy.
The βTommy Boyβ star opened up about his relationship with the βComing to Americaβ comedian during a recent episode of his βFly on the Wallβ podcast with guest Dana Carvey.
Spade, 61, confirmed that Murphy, 64, βhatedβ him after he made a joke at the βBeverly Hills Copβ starβs expense during an episode of βSaturday Night Liveβ in December 1995.
βLook, children, itβs a falling star,β Spade said as a photo of Murphy popped up on the screen during his infamous βSpade in Americaβ sketch. βMake a wish.β
βYes, thatβs right,β the βGrown Upsβ star added. βYou make a Hollywood Minute omelet, you break some eggs.β
Murphy didnβt forgive him for nearly 30 years.
βI do love Eddie Murphy,β Spade told CarveyΒ during his podcast. βWe had some bumps in the road along the way, early on. It was weird going from being a super fan to having him hate me overnight, and to try to win him back for the last 25 years.β
βI made fun of him and it didnβt go well, and he called me and we had it out,β he added of the βSNLβ dig. βActually, he had it out. I didnβt fight back really, because I did feel a little guilty about it, and he did make some sense. I just didnβt like that because he was a hero.β
The pair, however, have since resolved their conflict and even made up during the βSNLβ 50th anniversary special back in February.
βWe talked a little bit and everythingβs fine, and then he admitted on the show β not admitted, they just asked him about it β and he said, βYeah, weβre all good,’β Spade shared. βSo weβre all good.β
βThis is what happened,β theΒ βWayneβs Worldβ star added. βEddie, he just totally let it go.βΒ
This wouldnβt be the first time that Spade addressed his and Murphyβs surprising feud.
Earlier this year, during another episode of his popular βFly on the Wallβ podcast, the βJoe Dirtβ actor said that βeverything bad has evaporatedβ between him and the βTrading Placesβ star.
βI didnβt talk to him but thereβs absolutely no anything anymore. Everyoneβs cool,β he revealed shortly after the pairβs reunion at the βSNLβ 50th anniversary special.
βWe were friendly. We shouldβve taken a picture cause it was fun to see him,β Spade added. βThere were no weird vibes at the show.β
Murphy, meanwhile, touched upon the βSpade in Americaβ dig and its aftermath during a chat with The New York Times in June 2024.
After saying that Spadeβs joke felt βracistβ and like a βcheap shot,β Murphy acknowledged that it was even worse because one of his films, βVampire in Brooklyn,β had βfloppedβ at the box office less than two months earlier.
βIt was like, βYo, itβs in-house! Iβm one of the family, and youβre fβking with me like that?β It hurt my feelings,β he said during the outletβs βThe Interviewβ podcast last year.
βIβm cool with everybody,β Murphy later added. βItβs all love.β
The βShrekβ star addressed the incident more recently during his Netflix documentary βBeing Eddie,β which was released last month.
βItβs like your alma mater taking a shot at you,β Murphy explained. βAt my career, not how funny I was. Called me a falling star.β
