David Spade is reflecting on the early aughts.
While on his โFly on the Wallโ podcast with co-host Dana Carvey, the actor, 61, opened up about filming the 2003 comedy โDickie Roberts: Former Child Star.โ
The slapstick project, co-produced byย Adam Sandler, saw Spade play a down on his luck former child actor.
In the movie, a slew of real life former kid stars appeared, includingย Corey Feldman,ย Corey Haim, Barry Williams, Emmanuel Lewis, Danny Bonaduce and Leif Garrett. In one scene, all of the actors teamed up for a musical number.
โCorey Haim, remember him?โ Spade asked Carvey, 70. โHeโs Corey Feldmanโs buddy. Super sweet. Walking to lunch from the soundstage after singing, Iโm in my outfit and he goes, โHey, hey, thanks for having meโฆ Uh, hey, I was going to go off campus and eat.โ [He then asked], โDo we get a per diem for today?’โ
The โGrown Upsโ actor said he wasnโt, to which Haim, who died at age 38 in 2010, asked if Spade would be able to pay him.
Spade recalled telling him: โโI donโt think Iโm the one that gives you your per diem.โ And he goes, โBut I need some โcause I want to go get lunch.โ He goes, โYou got 100 bucks or something? I could just go get lunch?โ And I fโinโ did it.โ
At the time, Haim had a bad substance abuse problem, which Spade was aware of.
โI swear at the time it didnโt even hit me that he might go use or something,โ he continued. โAnd he probably didnโt, but I was like, โWas that stupid? Was that fโing dumb of me?’โ
Spade added that โthe parents a lot of the time, not all the time, a lot of times the parents are, like, spending the money. Theyโre like, โHey, youโre my kid. Itโs my money.โ And then when theyโre 18, theyโre like, โBack up that Brinks truck!โ And theyโre like, โThe thing is, thereโs not a ton left.’โ
Haim died from pneumonia in 2010, during his addiction. He passed away at his and his mother, Judy Haimโs Burbank apartment.
The โLost Boysโ alum had been sick during the last week of his life with flu-like symptoms.
Despite his addiction, no illegal drugs were found inside the apartment, per authorities.
Haimโs mother told RadarOnline at the time that she was battling cancer.
โI am a cancer victim and Corey was helping me at home,โ Judy said. โHe was a good boy. Iโm devastated by his death.โ
Feldman, 54, who starred in several movies and a reality television series with Haim, wrote about the loss of his โbrotherโ on his blog.
โThis is a tragic loss of a wonderful, beautiful, tormented soul, who will always be my brother, family, and best friend,โ the โDWTSโ alum penned in 2010. โWe must all take this as a lesson in how we treat the people we share this world with while they are still here to make a difference.โ
In 2024, Nicole Eggertย reflected on the ups and downs of her relationship with Haim, which lasted for two years from 1991 to 1993.
The pair also starred in several movies together, includingย โBlown Awayโ in 1992ย and โAnything for Loveโ in 1993.
Eggert, 53, told People that while she loved being around Haim on set, behind closed doors, things became โheavy.โ
โIt was scary to me. It was creepy,โ she remembered. โI remember the first time I ever saw cocaine was from him, but he wasnโt trying to get me to do anything with him. It was his own private thing, which in hindsight would feel a little bit strange, but he was never trying to drag me into that.โ
The two also had a short-lived engagement, with Eggert sharing: โHe proposed and we were working. We were on set, everything was so fun.โ
However, most of their time together evolved around Haimโs addiction.
Eggert recalled taking the โ80s star to the hospital because she didnโt know what to do when he ran out of drugs.
โHeโd go there [the hospital] to get stuff,โ she admitted. โWhen weโd be on set, producers supply it; theyโd supply drugs, and prescriptions mostly is what I saw. But no, if he was having the shakes and freaking out in the middle of the night and wanted to go to the emergency room, Iโd take him. Because I wasnโt in that head space or in that โ I didnโt know what to do. I was like, just take him to the hospital if thatโs where he wants to go.โ
After moving in together, Eggert realized how Haim spent his free time. She โquicklyโ realized she โhad to wash my hands ofโ the romance.
โWe came back to L.A., and he didnโt have a place because heโd been on the road filming and stuff, so I let him come stay with me at my place,โ Eggert went on. โAnd then thatโs when I saw the real behavior and the real darkness. And I couldnโt live with it, and I couldnโt condone it or support it or anything like that. Thatโs when I really saw the darkness.โ
After she cut ties, they kept in touch โhere and there.โ
โI would always consider him a friend forever,โ she detailed. โAnd I think heโd say the same.โ
