Benson Boone

22-year-old Benson Boone made his debut on the music scene in 2021 on Season 19 of “American Idol.”

Though the Monroe, Washington, native’s time on the singing competition series was short-lived, the young troubadour rocketed into the stratosphere in January 2024 after he released his single “Beautiful Things.” First finding a foothold on TikTok, the song became a smash, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Last year, Boone released his debut LP, “Fireworks and Rollerblades,” and a second hit single, “Slow It Down,” and opened for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in London.

Sabrina Carpenter

Though she has six studio albums under her belt, it’s undeniable that Sabrina Carpenter cemented her imprimatur on the music scene in 2024 with her three mega-hits, “Espresso,” “Please Please Please” and “Taste.” And, per the Grammys website, a musician is eligible for Best New Artist whether they have “just a few singles or 10 studio albums under their belts.”

Carpenter has carved out a path paved with Fran Drescher’s iconic “Nanny” looks and chart-topping earworms.

In August, she dropped her sixth LP, “Short n’ Sweet,” which went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200. And has there been any more infectious song this past year than “Espresso”?

She’s also up for six Grammys in total this year.

Doechii

Doechii scored her first viral single in 2020 with “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake.” A loud, high-energy introduction to the rapper’s style, she has since released two EPs and three mixtapes, worked with Kodak Black and Katy Perry and opened for Doja Cat on tour.

Born Jaylah Hickmon in Tampa, Florida, Doechii turned heads with her 2022 track “Crazy,” the music video for which was banned from trending on YouTube owing to its violence and nudity, content she said was meant to reflect the hardships and sexualization women face.

With the release of her mixtape “Alligator Bites Never Heal” in August, she won continued acclaim.

Khruangbin

Texan trio Khruangbin, which means “airplane” in Thai, have become known for their blend of international sounds — from Middle Eastern scales to Peruvian ‘cumbia’ and Thai funk from the ’60s and ’70s.

Made up of bassist Laura Lee Ochoa, guitarist Mark Speer, and drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson Jr., the group counts Barack Obama and Jay-Z among its fans and has played at Coachella and sold out several tours.

Khruangbin have also racked up an impressive list of collaborations, including with Paul McCartney and Leon Bridges. But the trio’s fourth album, 2024’s “A La Sala” (“to the room” in Spanish), was made without collaborators.

Raye

South London singer/songwriter Raye has worked on songs for the likes of Beyoncé and Rihanna and released five EPs and a handful of singles, including collaborations with David Guetta and Martin Solveig.

But Raye’s record label, Polydor, kept her from releasing an album of her own, prompting the chanteuse to go indie.

Her first LP, 2023’s “My 21st Century Blues,” earned rave reviews and launched the single “Escapism.” The track went viral on TikTok, topped the UK Singles Chart and made it to No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Raye made history at the 2024 BRIT Awards by taking home six trophies — the most for any artist in a single year.

Raye dropped her latest single, the seven-minute epic “Genesis,” in June.

Chappell Roan

Thought by many to be the front-runner in this category, Chappell Roan had a banner 2024.

Her 2023 debut studio album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” reached soaring heights in 2024 — it was the 5th most streamed album in the US — after she dropped her single “Good Luck, Babe!” in April.

After starting 2024 strong as an opener on Olivia Rodrigo’s sold-out “Guts World Tour,” Roan went on to draw staggering crowds at Coachella, the Governors Ball, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits.

In addition to Best New Artist, the 26-year-old scored five other Grammy nominations this year, including Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Pop Solo Performance).

Shaboozey

Blending country, Americana and hip-hop, Shaboozey dropped his first single, “Jeff Gordon,” in 2014, but 10 years later, he hit the big time.

Born Collins Chibueze, Shaboozey had two guest features on Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” —”Spaghettii” and “Sweet Honey Buckiin’ ” — and, after the album debuted at No. 1 last March, listeners wanted more from the 29-year-old Nigerian American.

His 2024 single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” then dethroned Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” for the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot Country chart before spending 19 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100.

His third album, “Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going,” also made waves, debuting at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Teddy Swims

With his powerful and soulful voice, Teddy Swims has crooned his way into the hearts of millions, Grammy voters among them.

Born Jaten Dimsdale, Swims started out on YouTube in 2019, but it was the Georgia native’s debut LP, “I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1),” that gave him his big break after its release in 2023.

“Lose Control,” one of the singles off of the album, entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart in August 2023 after dropping in June of that year. It kept climbing the charts, finally reaching the No. 1 spot in March 2024.

Another single spawned by the album, “The Door,” also made it into the Hot 100, peaking at No. 24 last October.

His follow-up album, “I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 2),” which just dropped on Jan. 24, will debut at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 200.
