Benson Boone
22-year-old Benson Boone made his debut on the music scene in 2021 on Season 19 of โAmerican Idol.โ
Though the Monroe, Washington, nativeโs time on the singing competition series was short-lived, the young troubadour rocketed into the stratosphere in January 2024 after he released his single โBeautiful Things.โ First finding a foothold on TikTok, the song became a smash, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Last year, Boone released his debut LP, โFireworks and Rollerblades,โ and a second hit single, โSlow It Down,โ and opened for Taylor Swiftโsย Eras Tourย in London.
Sabrina Carpenter
Though she has six studio albums under her belt, itโs undeniable that Sabrina Carpenter cemented her imprimatur on the music scene in 2024 with her three mega-hits, โEspresso,โ โPlease Please Pleaseโ and โTaste.โ And, per the Grammys website, a musician is eligible for Best New Artist whether they have โjust a few singles or 10 studio albums under their belts.โ
Carpenter has carved out a path paved with Fran Drescherโs iconic โNannyโ looks and chart-topping earworms.
In August, she dropped her sixth LP,ย โShort nโ Sweet,โ which went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200. And has there been any more infectious song this past year than โEspressoโ?
Sheโs also up for six Grammys in total this year.
Doechii
Doechii scored her first viral single in 2020 with โYucky Blucky Fruitcake.โ A loud, high-energy introduction to the rapperโs style, she has since released two EPs and three mixtapes, worked with Kodak Black andย Katy Perry and opened forย Doja Catย on tour.
Born Jaylah Hickmon in Tampa, Florida,ย Doechiiย turned heads with her 2022 track โCrazy,โ the music video for which was banned from trending on YouTube owing to its violence and nudity, content she said was meant to reflect the hardships and sexualization women face.
With the release of her mixtapeย โAlligator Bites Never Healโ in August, she won continued acclaim.
Khruangbin
Texan trio Khruangbin, which means โairplaneโ in Thai, have become known for their blend of international sounds โ from Middle Eastern scales to Peruvianย โcumbiaโ and Thai funk from the โ60s and โ70s.
Made up of bassist Laura Lee Ochoa, guitarist Mark Speer, and drummer Donald โDJโ Johnson Jr., the group counts Barack Obama andย Jay-Z among its fans and has played at Coachella and sold out several tours.
Khruangbin have also racked up an impressive list of collaborations, including with Paul McCartney and Leon Bridges. But the trioโs fourth album, 2024โs โA La Salaโย (โto the roomโ in Spanish), was made without collaborators.
Raye
South London singer/songwriter Raye has worked on songs for the likesย of Beyoncรฉย andย Rihanna and released five EPs and a handful of singles, including collaborations withย David Guettaย andย Martin Solveig.
But Rayeโs record label, Polydor, kept her from releasing an album of her own, prompting the chanteuse to go indie.
Her first LP, 2023โsย โMy 21st Century Blues,โ earned rave reviews and launched the single โEscapism.โ The track went viral on TikTok, topped the UK Singles Chart and made it to No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.ย
Raye made history at the 2024 BRIT Awards by taking home six trophies โ the most for any artist in a single year.
Raye dropped her latest single, the seven-minute epic โGenesis,โ in June.
Chappell Roan
Thought by many to be the front-runner in this category, Chappell Roan had a banner 2024.
Her 2023 debut studio album,ย โThe Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,โ reached soaring heights in 2024 โย it was the 5th most streamed album in the US โ after she dropped her single โGood Luck, Babe!โ in April.
After starting 2024 strong as an opener onย Olivia Rodrigoโs sold-outย โGuts World Tour,โ Roan went on to draw staggering crowds at Coachella, the Governors Ball, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits.
In addition to Best New Artist, the 26-year-old scored five other Grammy nominations this year, including Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Pop Solo Performance).
Shaboozey
Blending country, Americana and hip-hop, Shaboozey dropped his first single, โJeff Gordon,โ in 2014, but 10 years later, he hit the big time.
Born Collins Chibueze, Shaboozey had two guest features on Beyoncรฉโs โCowboy Carterโ โโSpaghettiiโ and โSweet Honey Buckiinโ โ โ and, after the album debuted at No. 1 last March, listeners wanted more from the 29-year-old Nigerian American.
His 2024 single โA Bar Song (Tipsy)โ then dethroned Beyoncรฉโs โTexas Hold โEmโ for the No. 1 spot on Billboardโs Hot Country chart before spending 19 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100.
His third album, โWhere Iโve Been, Isnโt Where Iโm Going,โ also made waves, debuting at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Teddy Swims
With his powerful and soulful voice, Teddy Swims has crooned his way into the hearts of millions, Grammy voters among them.
Born Jaten Dimsdale, Swims started out on YouTube in 2019, but it was the Georgia nativeโs debut LP,ย โIโve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1),โ that gave him his big break after its release in 2023.
โLose Control,โ one of the singles off of the album, entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart in August 2023 after dropping in June of that year. It kept climbing the charts, finally reaching the No. 1 spot in March 2024.
Another single spawned by the album, โThe Door,โ also made it into the Hot 100, peaking at No. 24 last October.
His follow-up album, โIโve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 2),โ which just dropped on Jan. 24, will debut at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 200.
