One of Australia’s most recognizable celebrity chefs has revealed the biggest difference between supermarkets around the world – and it’s simpler than you think.

Curtis Stone, who is a Coles ambassador and currently in Australia promoting the brand’s new collectibles range, told news.com.au there is a very simple difference between supermarkets in Australia and those overseas.

Stone, who is married to American actress Lindsay Price, splits his time between Australia and the United States.

“The biggest difference is a pretty simple one — it’s representative of the country,” he told news.com.au.

“When you think about supermarket choices in Australia there are differences between them, but when you go to some in England or America, there are some that are very specialized and some that are very broad-massed.”

He said the difference was that in places like America they have Walmart on one side of the spectrum and then supermarkets such as Whole Foods, which prides itself on being an “organic grocer”.

He explained there was a “giant gap” between these two options.

“We don’t have that giant gap, which I think means our supermarkets place in more areas,” he said.

Stone also pointed out that Australia has “unbelievable” produce when it comes to seafood and meat.

“The thing that I love about working with Coles is we serve everyone. We serve the country really well, and that means finding great quality, great value. It’s a really hard job,” he said.

The 49-year-old said he didn’t want to “get up on his soapbox” about it, but recalls talking to a carrot supplier who wanted to get numbers perfect for the coming months as they didn’t want to create excess, which means many would go to waste, or have a shortage.

“That balance is really tricky,” he said.

Stone is currently in Australia in his role as a Coles ambassador.

Coles announced last week it now has a range of six leakproof glass containers to collect, as well as a manual vacuum pump to seal the containers. The containers are made from durable borosilicate glass and designed to stack in the fridge, pantry or freezer. The containers can even be cooked in.

The brand partnered with the Michelin star chef for the collection. All shoppers have to do is spend $20 or more in one transaction, and scan their Flybuys card.

Once customers collect enough credits, they can redeem it online or in-store. This excludes the app. Shoppers can also choose to purchase the collection at its full retail price.

Aussies could start collecting the containers from March 19.
