Bruce Willisโ wife is giving an important update on his dementia battle.
In a preview of Emma Heming Willisโ sit-down interview with Diane Sawyer airing on ABC Tuesday night, the 70-year-old actorโs wife explained the current status of his health after he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2023.
โBruce is still very mobile,โ Emma, 47, shared. โBruce is in really great health overall, you know.โ
โItโs just his brain that is failing him,โ she added.
Emma โ who has been married to the โDie Hardโ actor since 2009 and shares daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11,ย with him โย said that Willisโ โlanguage is goingโ and the family has โlearned to adaptโ to communicate with him in โa different way.โ
When Sawyer, 79, asked if there are โdays that it would be Bruce again,โ Emma replied: โWe still get those days. Not days, but we get moments.โ
โItโs his laugh, right? Like, he has such, like, a hearty laugh,โ the model continued. โAnd, you know, sometimes youโll see that twinkle in his eye, or that smirk, and, you know, I just get, like, transported.โ
As she fought back tears, Emma explained, โAnd itโs just hard to see, because as quickly as those moments appear, then it goes. Itโs hard.โ
โBut Iโm grateful,โ she stated. โIโm grateful that my husband is still very much here.โ
Reflecting on the moment doctors told Willis about his diagnosis, Emma said, โTo leave there with nothing, just nothing, with a diagnosis I couldnโt pronounce, I couldnโt understand what it was.โ
โI was so panicked. I remember hearing it and not hearing anything else. I was free falling,โ she recalled.
The author also said she doesnโt think Willis โever really connected the dotsโ to be able to understand his diagnosis.
Earlier in the interview, Emma described the subtle symptoms that Willis had before he was officially diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
โFor someone who was very talkative and very engaged, he was just a little more quiet,โ she shared. โWhen the family would get together, he would just melt a little bit.โ
โIt felt a little removed, very cold, not like Bruce, who was very warm and affectionate,โ Emma continued. โTo go the complete opposite of that was alarming and scary.โ
Willis was initially diagnosed with aphasia in 2022, at which point he decided to retire from acting.
The following year, Willisโ family โ including hisย ex-wife, Demi Moore, and their daughters Rumer, 37,ย Scout, 34,ย andย Tallulah, 31 โ announced he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
โWhile this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis,โย they said in a joint statement.
โFTD is a cruel disease that many of us have never heard of and can strike anyone,โ the family added.
Willisโ family members haveย given gradual updates on his healthย since his diagnosis. In September, Tallulah said on โTodayโ that her dad is โstable, which, in this situation, is good.โ
In Feb., Moore, 62, told Variety she visits her ex-husband on a weekly basis and has been a source of support for Emma.
โFor me, there was never a question. I show up because thatโs what you do for the people you love,โ the Oscar nominee said.
Heming Willisโ book, โThe Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path,โ is out on Sept. 9.
โEmma & Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journeyโย airs Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
