Billy Joel and Elton John havenโt always seen eye to eye.
During the newly released second part of HBOโs โBilly Joel: And So It Goesโ documentary, Joel revealed how Johnโs public push for him to enter rehab caused a major rift between the two music superstars.
โElton had made a comment that he thought I needed real rehab,โ the โMovinโ Outโ singer said in the new doc. โHe chalked it up to, โOh, heโs a drunk.โ And that really hurt me.โ
โI said, wait a minute? Donโt you know me better than that?โ Joel, 76, added. โAnd there was bad blood for a little while. There was a dovetailing of things that happened during that time.โ
The โPiano Manโ singer was referring to an interview John, 78, gave Rolling Stone in 2011 shortly after the pair toured together.
After John claimed that he and Joel had โso many cancelled toursโ because of โillnessesโ and โalcoholism,โ he suggested that the โCaptain Jackโ singer seek real help.
โHeโs going to hate me for this, but every time he goes to rehab, theyโve been light,โ the โTiny Dancerโ musician said at the time. โI love you, Billy, and this is tough love.โ
Recalling how he felt after Johnโs interview was published, Joel said that he was โclobberedโ and had hit โrock bottom.โ
โI was disillusioned with what I thought it was all supposed to mean,โ he said in the second part of the new HBO doc. โIt was like all the signs were pointing to me: Enough.โ
โAnd I wrote this letter to the band,โ he added. โโI donโt want to do this anymore. Iโm gonna stop.’โ
Joel previously started rehab in 2005 following what he called an โultimatumโ from his then-wife, Katie Lee.
He entered the Betty Ford Center for a stint, then temporarily stopped touring once his time at the center was over.
The โViennaโ singer has since quit drinking altogether.
โI stopped a couple of years ago,โ Joel told theย Los Angeles Timesย in 2023. โIt wasnโt a big AA kick. I just got to a point where Iโd had enough.โ
โI didnโt enjoy being completely inebriated, and it probably created more problems in my life than I needed,โ he added.
Elsewhere in the new โBilly Joel: And So It Goesโ documentary, the Grammy-winner revealed that he didnโt like being compared to Elton John โ even if they were close friends and frequent tourmates.
โWhy would I wanna work with another well-known piano playerโs band?โ Joel said while discussing an incident when some suggested he use Johnโs band.
โThe lack of imagination was staggering,โ he added. โAnd I was already having a critical issue with them comparing me to Elton.โ
More recently, Joel has made headlines for a shocking brain disorder diagnosis that has forced the โStrangerโ artist to cancel all his concerts through next year.
Called normal pressure hydrocephalus, the condition affects oneโs hearing, vision and balance.ย
Joelย announced that he was diagnosedย with normal pressure hydrocephalus in May, and he also revealed that he had to cancel his 2025 tour because his condition was โexacerbated by recent concert performances.โ
Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period,โ aย statement from his team read. โBilly is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving.โ
The message added that Joel is โgrateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.โ
Joel then opened up about his โscaryโ brain disorder diagnosis earlier this month.
โI know a lot of people are worried about me and my health, but Iโm okay,โ he told Peopleย in an interview published July 21. โWhat I have is something very few people know about, including me, no matter how much you try to research it.โ
โIโm doing my best to work with it and to recover from it,โ he shared.
Sadly, the legendary songwriterโs diagnosis forced him to miss the world premiereย of โBilly Joel: And So It Goesโ when it played at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival in June.
Both parts of HBOโs new Billy Joel documentary are now streaming.
