Jude Law wishes that he auditioned for more roles that relied on his βgood looks.β
βI didnβt feel like I really ever leaned into playing handsome, but there were roles that required an attractive energy,β the 51-year-old actor told DuJour magazine in an interview published June 10.
The seasoned actor has played leading roles in movies such as βThe Talented Mr. Ripley,β βThe Holidayβ and βAlfie.β
βI was trying to play against my looks in my early 20s, and now Iβm saggy and balding,β he went on. βI wish I had played it up more.β
Currently, Law is playing King Henry VIII in βFirebrand,β which will be released in theaters on June 14.
In the film, Law transforms himself into the past king of England, who was known to have a large belly and a rotting leg towards the end of his life.
The βFantastic Beastsβ franchise star had to change his facial features and wear a weighted costume, a feathered hat, a gray scruffy beard and perfume that made him smell bad.
βI read several interesting accounts that you could smell Henry three rooms away. His leg was rotting so badly. He hid it with rose oil,β Law said at the Cannes Film Festival,Β according to Variety. βI thought it would have a great impact if I smelt awful.β
King Henry VIII suffered a leg ulcer following a jousting accident, so Law went to a perfume specialist who would be willing to create a personalized scent for the role.
βShe makes wonderful scents, and she also makes awful scents. She somehow came up with this extraordinary variety of blood, fecal matter and sweat,β Law shared.
Law told DuJour it was refreshing to βhave not leaned in to any sort of attraction,β saying that βitβs been satisfying not having to turn that switch on.β
The actorβs son, Rafferty Law, is also making a name for himself in Hollywood. The 27-year-old recently starred in βMasters of the Air,β on Apple TV+ this year, alongside Austin Butler, Callum Turner and Barry Keoghan.
βIβm thrilled because we get to share our enthusiasm, and I get to give him advice if he wants to hear it,β the βSherlock Holmesβ actor said about his son. βIβm immensely proud that heβs put himself out there because he found something that he loves. Heβs obviously seen the way I work, and itβs rubbed off on him.β
Although the βHugoβ actor is proud, he does have mixed feelings about Raff getting into Hollywood.
βItβs complicated, because Iβm aware of how hard it is,β he explained. βWhen I came into this business, I didnβt have the comparison, but with him, people might always say, βOh, youβre just like your dad.β Which is nonsense; his career is his career.β
Up next, Law will star in Disney+βs new βStar Warsβ series, βSkeleton Crew,β which will be released later this year.
