βHacksaw Ridgeβ was a World War II drama that earned a slew of Oscar nominations, including a Best Actor nomination for Garfield.
Continuing, the βUnder The Banner of Heavenβ actor said heβd learned working with Gibson βthat people deserve second chances, third chances, fourth chances. That none of us are infallible.β
βNo no no no Andrew,β one fan said on X, formerly Twitter.Β

Another fan sneered, βFourth chances??? Who gives someone a fourth chance?? At that point you are a f β β kin rube.βΒ
The βAmazing Spider-Manβ star, who is Jewish, said he had βdeep, important conversationsβ with Gibson, who made antisemitic remarks in 2006 when he was arrested for a DUI.Β
Garfield continued, βHeβs done a lot of beautiful healing with himselfβ¦ heβs an amazing filmmaker, and I think he deserves to make films. He deserves to tell stories, because he has a very, very big, compassionate heart.β
After the βBraveheartβ actorβs 2006 arrest, he issued a public apology stating, βI want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested on a DUI charge.βΒ

She cited Gibson as an example.Β
βWe were at a crowded party with one of my good friends,β she said. βAnd Mel Gibson was smoking a cigar, and weβre all talking and he said to my friend, whoβs gay, βOh wait, am I gonna get AIDS?β And then something came up about Jews, and he said, βYouβre not an oven dodger, are you?ββ
Garfield recalled Gibsonβs βempathyβ to People.
βHeβs the kind of director that would come from behind the monitors, just with his eyes wet,β the βWe Live in Timeβ star said.
Garfield added,Β βHe knew when it was right and he knew when it wasnβt right. And I just really trusted him. And heβs a visceral storyteller so he can feel β¦ Heβs like he canβt help but feel everything. Heβs a real empathetic guy.β
Another critic, meanwhile, added of Garfield: βBro you were doing so well for like a minute there.β
