He’s Mr. Lonely.
Akon’s wife has filed for divorce from the popular singer-songwriter just days before their 29th wedding anniversary on Sept. 15, per court documents obtained by TMZ on Friday.
Tomeka Thiam, who says she tied the knot with the “Smack That” rapper, 52, in 1996, cited irreconcilable differences in her filing, according to the outlet.
Thiam is requesting joint legal custody of the 17-year-old kid she says they share, as well as sole physical custody of the child, the docs reveal.
Tomeka is also requesting spousal support from the superstar and wants to block the court’s ability to award any spousal support to Akon, per TMZ.
The Post has reached out to Akon’s rep for comment.
Akon, born Aliaune Thiam, first gained popularity after releasing his hit singles “Lonely” and “Locked Up,” as well as his debut album, “Trouble,” in 2004.
He signed with Universal Motown shortly after, and has since been nominated for five Grammys.
Although Akon has largely kept his personal life private, he claimed he was a father to nine kids while discussing Nick Cannon and his 11 children during an interview in December 2022.
“That’s how life is supposed to be. Why not? He’s rich. He’s responsible. He takes care of every one of those children,” Akon said during “The Zeze Millz Show” at the time, per Complex. “And the baby mothers are with it. And they hurt for nothing. And they live comfortably.”
“He’s there for every one of them. He’s there for every single one of those kids,” he added. “I got nine and I’m there for every one of mine.”
More recently, the Senegalese-American musician has shifted his focus to creating a “futuristic” city in his native Senegal.
Dubbed Akon City, he first unveiled the $6 billion “real-life Wakanda” project in 2020.
“I want the buildings to look like real African sculptures that they make in the villages,” he said during a ceremony in the West African nation’s capital of Dakar at the time.
The plan, however, was scrapped earlier this summer after seven years of delays, according to Africa Facts Zone. Instead, the outlet reported that Akon is working on a “more realistic project” in its place.
Still, Akon has not stopped thinking ahead, and he opened up about the future of the music industry and artificial intelligence last year.
“What I’ve learned about the music is that it is going to gradually continue to expand, and grow, and change the perspective of how people think and how they move,” the “Don’t Matter” singer told the Associated Press in April 2024.
“Today, things are more difficult,” he continued. “Not only just for the artist, but also for the fan as well, because it’s more energy that you have to actually invest to find something that you really love and relate to.”
Akon added that he believes AI would help the music industry rather than destroy it.
“I think AI is going to actually make the experience better, believe it or not,” he shared. “I don’t think it’s a threat in any kind of way.”
