Adam Scott was totally bugginโ.
The actor, 52, revealed what it was like to watch his college friend, Paul Rudd, shoot to stardom after the cult classic โCluelessโ came out in 1995.
โWhen Paul got that job, thatโs when everything changed and one of my friends was suddenly famous,โ Scott recalled while on Entertainment Weeklyโsย โThe Awardistโ podcast. โIt was so crazy. Yeah, and that was 30 years ago, too.โย
The actors first became pals while attending the same university.
โI started at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts the year after he graduated, and already he was kind of famous on campus,โ Scott explained. โI got to school and people wereโฆ There was chatter about this guy Paul Rudd, and part of it was becauseย he had already gotten a Nintendo commercialย that was airing and it was like, โWhoa.โโ
And everyone on campus knew that the โAnt-Manโ actor, 56, โwas going to explodeโ at some point soon.
Meanwhile, Scott and Rudd didnโt meet in person until the โParks and Recreationโ alum graduated.
โHe was there giving out an award as the past star of the school,โ Scott reflected. โAnd so we hung out after the graduation and became fast friends.โ
Luckily, being in the same industry hasnโt proven to be competitive thus far.
โI remember I auditioned forย โClueless,โ but not for the role Paul played,โ Scott shared. โI auditioned for some other role.โย
Ruddโs portrayal of Josh inย โClueless,โ opposite Alicia Silverstoneโs Cher, was the funny manโs breakout role.
After โClueless,โ Rudd starred in the 1996 adaptation ofย โRomeo + Juliet,โ the dramaย โThe Locustsโ in 1997, and 1998โs rom-comย โThe Object of My Affectionโย with Jennifer Aniston.ย
In 2000, Rudd played Nick Carraway in โThe Great Gatsby.โ
For Scottโs part, he rose to fame on a slew of hit โ90s series, including โER,โ โBoy Meets World,โ and โParty of Five.โ
One of his most beloved roles was starring on the sitcom โParks and Recreationโ for seven seasons. Rudd guest-starred on the show alongside his pal.
They also starred in the 2011 comedyย โOur Idiot Brotherโ together.
Earlier this summer, โCluelessโ celebrated its 30th anniversary.
โI donโt know if I have a favorite line,โ Rudd told Access Hollywood in March while reminiscing on the film. โItโs the 30th anniversary? Oh my god! That was a while ago. Doesnโt seem like it was that long ago, but it was.โ
In April, it was announced that Silverstone, 48, would reprise her iconic role in a โCluelessโ sequel series. The star will also executive produce alongside Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.
โTotally bugginโโฆ in the best way ๐โโ๏ธโจ,โ Silverstone wrote onย Instagram about the news.
Along with Rudd and Silverstone, the movie included Brittany Murphy, whoย died in 2009 at age 32, Stacey Dash, Breckin Meyer, Donald Faison and Jeremy Sisto.ย
The comedy was loosely based on Jane Austenโs novel, โEmma.โ
This isnโt the first time โCluelessโ has made its way to the small screen. In 1996, there was a โCluelessโ TV series on ABC with Rachel Blanchard as Cher Horowitz.
In 2019,ย Schwartz, 48, explained why he โlovesโ telling stories about teen romance.
โObviously as Iโve gotten older, Iโve started to have a different perspective on teenagers, and maybe even more empathy for the fragility of that time. I also have more empathy for parents, now,โย he told the Postย at the time.
Looking back on the beloved character, Silverstone told Vogue in honor of the filmโs 25th anniversary that she found โCher on the page to be materialistic and unappealing.โ
โAnd really annoying, to be honest. Just everything I sort of loathed,โ she added. โBut I realized that was just me judging her, and once I started working on her I found all the heart and all the love.โ
โShe loves her daddy so much! And sheโs trying to be a supportive friend, so I just sorta put all of my love and heart into this character with these other aspects that were cringeworthy.โ
