Whan makes surprise decision to leave as LPGA commissioner
Mike Whan is leaving the LPGA Trip after 11 years as commissioner, a surprise statement Wednesday that comes simply 3 weeks after he assisted the trip through a season interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Whan did not set a date for when he would leave. The statement was explained as the start of a succession strategy.
Although the pandemic closed down the LPGA Trip for 5 months and took a piece out of a years of cost savings, Whan states the trip came out of the year much more economically protect.
He did not provide a clear factor for stepping away or stating what he would do next.
“The LPGA is poised for even greater heights, and as such, I’m excited to hand the baton to the next leader and become their biggest supporter,” he stated in a letter to the LPGA personnel, members and sponsors. “One of the hardest jobs of a leader is to know when their work is done. If the COVID-19 pandemic taught me anything, it was that the LPGA executive staff has full control of our business and is capable of incredible things.”
The statement comes 2 weeks prior to the LPGA Trip starts a brand-new season, back to complete strength entering into the year.
