Syracuse grappling with injuries as it slides in the ACC

Syracuse facing injuries as it moves in the ACC

Syracuse is having a hard time in this most hard of seasons as injuries accumulate and unskilled gamers fill lineup holes where required.

Orange coach Dino Babers now is confronted with the possibility of ending up the season without 2 of his crucial gamers – protective standout Andre Cisco is currently out for the rest and beginning quarterback Tommy DeVito might join him.

Cisco, a preseason, first-team AP All-American security from Long Island who got in the season with 12 interceptions, many in the Bowl Neighborhood, suffered a lower body injury in pregame warmups prior to a win over Georgia Tech simply over 2 weeks back and is out for the season. DeVito, a redshirt junior from New Jersey, suffered an injury to his left leg when sacked in the 4th quarter – for the 5th time in a 38-24 house loss to formerly winless Duke on Saturday – and needed to be assisted from the field by 2 employee. He completed the video game enjoying from the sideline with a boot on the hurt leg and leaning on crutches.

Not a promise.

“Football’s physical, and that’s the part that makes it different from other sports. It’s the part that you embrace,” Babers stated Monday. “We understand that people are going to get hurt and that next guys have to step up. It’s what makes the game unique. We accept that part of it.”

Versus Duke, Syracuse (1-3, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) began 5 freshmen (redshirt or real) on defense – consisting of Rob Hanna at rover in location of Cisco – for the very first time in program history on either side of the ball. And heaven Devils benefited from that youth, hurrying for 363 backyards behind Deon Jackson (169) and Mataeo Durant (163), who both obtained profession highs and swindled huge gainers. Jackson had a 50-yard run and Durant a 48-yarder in the very first half, shedding tacklers along the method.

“We had some missed tackles on the back end, we had some missed tackles on the front end, we had some defensive linemen that got tired of running into things that are bigger,” Babers stated. “That’s the whole physicality part of it. When you start slowly getting tired or not hitting those gaps the way you’re supposed to hit them, they’re going to start bleeding yardage on you. It’s difficult when you’re at that young age to be able to bang with some of those guys that are older. We have to match that physicality. We have to dig down deep.”

The efficiency on offense led by Clemson transfer Chase Brice at quarterback allowed Duke to hold the ball for 102 plays – 50 more than Syracuse – and almost 40 minutes. Still, the Syracuse defense required 4 turnovers to increase its season overall to 14, tops in the country, and scored on a fumble healing. However the offense stopped working to score off any of the other 3 Duke miscues, most significantly when DeVito was stopped on a fourth-and-1 deep in Duke area early in the 2nd quarter. Syracuse was outgained 645-286 and its run video game sputtered with 28 backyards on 23 efforts, the 3rd time in 4 video games the Orange have actually balanced under 2 backyards a bring.

Syracuse started the season with roadway losses to North Carolina and Pittsburgh prior to breaking through versus Georgia Tech, 37-20. The Orange will attempt to rebound once again when they host unbeaten Liberty (4-0) on Saturday, the only non-conference video game of the season for Syracuse. Then it’s on to top-ranked Clemson.

“If you didn’t think this was going to be a different type of year you were pulling the wool over your eyes,” Babers stated. “For those who endure, they’ll be more powerful than ever. The entire thing is not to stop, not to quit, keep your knees bent and be all set to change and improvise … and when the smoke clears still be standing.

“There’s some pride in still standing when this thing’s all over cause it’s been a wild, wild ride.”
